VDV Recommendations 180/1 – 180/4 have been revised, restructured and renumbered in consideration of the valid European standards EN 14750 “Railway applications - Air conditioning for urban and suburban rolling stock” and EN 14813 “Railway applications - Air conditioning for driving cabs“ as well as the trend to air conditioning of passenger compartments and driver’s cabs of urban rolling stock.
The above-mentioned European standards specify the basic requirements for the capacity of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. VDV Recommendation 182 provides further information to enable the user to word the specification data more precisely in consideration of the correlations, which are sometimes rather unclear, and to draft and dimension the HVAC components and the total HVAC system.
Pursuant to EN 14813 the operator and the manufacturer have to agree on certain details in a contractual specification. This Recommendation specifies these details and includes recommendations.
Unlike VDV Recommendation 181, which deals with air conditioning for passenger areas and which has superseded VDV Recommendation 180/1, VDV Recommendation 182 does not include maintenance pointers to the full extent as VDV Recommendation 183 deals with the procurement and maintenance of HVAC systems for tramcars, light rail vehicles and metro vehicles.
This VDV Recommendation has been prepared together with industry representatives and is based on the state of the art.
Generally, (an) “air conditioning (system)” is a system that does not only vent and heat, but also cools and dehumidifies the air. The exact term, i.e. “heating, ventilation and air conditioning system”, is often abbreviated to “HVAC system”.
VDV Recommendation 182 supersedes VDV Recommendations 180/2, 180/3 and 180/4. The numbering has been modified in consideration of the rearranged contents.
