Produktbeschreibung

More than 20 years ago some VDV member companies began to introduce air conditioning in line-service buses. Many people found this idea unrealistic and were critical about it, but mean- while it has become state of the art, and nowadays customers, passengers and employees of public transport companies expect air conditioning in line-service buses.

The public transport companies have gained varied practical experience with air conditioning in line-service buses since it was introduced. This experience is considered in this VDV Recommen- dation. Moreover, possible future developments are outlined. Thus, it specifies the state of the art and provides a realistic outlook on the future heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) in line-service buses, also for new/trendsetting vehicle concepts.

The climatic conditions in the Central European countries are often a strain to people for relative- ly long periods of time in the year. Attention has to be drawn to the fact that these climatic con- ditions can worsen the climate in a line-service bus.

The following factors influence the climate in a line-service buses:

  • —  new bus designs with e.g. bigger panes and low floors, which are nearer to the engine com- partments, lead to higher temperatures in the buses due to the solar radiation and the heat emission of the engine;

  • —  short distances between stops and traffic-related halts, especially in urban areas, lead to low- er average speeds, which means that the air change in the interior of the bus is insufficient if it is only realised by top-hung windows or roof hatches.

    In Germany about 70 % of the public transport is performed by way of line-service buses. Thus, air conditioning in line-services buses contributes significantly to improving the image of public transport and is a clear confirmation of the fact that the customers’ wishes have top priority nowadays. Air conditioning in the bus also improves the driver’s workplace conditions considera- bly.

    Due to political climate change targets less climate-damaging coolants are available on the mar- ket nowadays. This reduced offer has increased the costs, on the one hand, and increased the use of alternative coolants, on the other hand. At present, new hermitically closed systems are being tested, which can also be used as heat pumps and which can use e.g. CO2 as the coolant.

    This VDV Recommendation applies to diesel- and gas-powered buses as well as to hybrid buses, fuel cell buses and electric buses operated as line-service buses according to licensing classes I and II.

    This VDV Recommendation supersedes VDV Recommendation 236 from 2015.
