Recommendations on the Design for Strength of Urban Rail Rolling Stock according to BOStrab Ausgabe 10/2016 englische Version VDV Recommendation 152 is the first overall concept for verification of the design for strength of urban rail rolling stock. In German such vehicles are especially tramcars, light rail vehicles and metro vehicles, which are operated in accordance with the German Federal Regulations on the Construction and Operation of Tramway Systems (BOStrab). This Recommendation is intended for manufacturers and operators as well as third-party experts and supervisory authorities and is to support them in their effort to verify the strength of urban rail rolling stock and to facilitate the understanding and observance of limits. For this purpose the generally accepted technical rules as well as the state-of-the-art multi-body simulation method and the endurance strength demonstration method were considered. The former edition of this VDV Recommendation was published in 1992 and was based on experience with vehicles manufactured in the 1970s and 1980s. The load assumptions of this VDV Recommendation have proved their worth beyond the borders of Germany for those vehicles and for similar types of vehicles manufactured later. As regards new types of vehicles, especially low-floor vehicles, experience in the last 20 years has shown that the load assumptions specified in the former edition were not always satisfactory. Consequently, VDV Recommendation 152 had to be revised.
