VDV Recommendation No. 160 “Basic Requirements for Electric Equipment for Urban Rail Vehicles” [Print]
Edition 07/2024
VDV Recommendation 160 is VDV’s basic publication about the electrical and electronic equipment for urban
rail vehicles. Its contents are based on the present broad variety of European and international standards in
this field.
It is intended to support VDV member companies operating urban rail vehicles, i. e. tramcars, light rail vehicles
and metro vehicles, by the procurement of new vehicles and by the modernisation or retrofit of older vehicles.
It is also intended to be a guideline for engineering consultants that support public transport companies by the
preparation of technical specifications and companies that manufacture electrical and electronic equipment or
their components.
As many of the standards concerning electrical and electronic equipment for urban rail vehicles have been
revised after the publication of the first edition of this VDV Recommendation in 2002 and as further standards
dealing with electrical and electronic equipment for urban rail vehicles have been published after 2002, it
became necessary to revise this VDV Recommendation. A decisive factor in this respect was the revision of
EN 50153 “Railway applications – Rolling stock – Protective provisions relating to electrical hazards”
. Moreover,
valuable suggestions for improvement of this VDV Recommendation that were put forward by the public
transport companies are now an integral part of it.
This VDV Recommendation supersedes VDV Recommendation 160 from 2002.
