VDV recommendation 823 provides an overview of a subject area of increasing importance.

In recent years, however, the technical conditions of the vehicles and the maintenance procedures adapted to them have changed, so that a revision of this publication has become necessary.

The limited financial resources will continue to demand functionally and cost-optimized concepts for new buildings, reconstructions and extensions to depots and workshops, as well as economical functional processes for vehicle maintenance. The requirements for depots to meet environmental protection requirements have also become more strict. Taking this development into account, the present version is intended to contribute to the transfer of acquired experience across transport companies.

VDV recommendation 823 provides assistance for the construction and reconstruction of depots and workshops for rail vehicles (BOStrab and tramtrains in mixed operation according to EBO). It is intended to serve as an important planning aid for rail transport companies wishing to build depots and workshops using GVFG funding. At the same time, it can be used by authorities as an assessment document for such projects.

The current edition of VDV recommendation 823 replaces the recommendation from 2001.
