VDV Recommendation 551 specifies overhead contact line poles and wall anchors for urban DC rail systems operated pursuant to the German Federal Regulations on the Construction and Operation of Tramways (BOStrab), the German Federal Regulations on the Construction and Operation of Railways (EBO) and the German Federal Regulations on the Construction and Operation of Narrow-Gauge Railways (ESBO), i.e. for tramway and light rail systems as well as trolleybus systems. Moreover, it comprises an overview of the pole foundation variants. It is the objective of this Recommendation to provide the employees responsible for overhead contact lines (OCLs) in public transport companies, engineering firms, the supply industry and building enterprises with advice on the design, dimensioning and selection of poles and their foundations. The Recommendation goes into detail with the actions, load cases and load combinations that the poles have to withstand and that have to be specified by the operators of OCLs. Moreover, it gives an overview of the foundation variants inclusive of their advantages and disadvantages as well as of the requirements for wall anchors, which are an interesting alternative to the classic pole foundation.
